Over the years I have gained great joy from painting and drawing animals, from the obsessive drawing of horses as a child to portraits of our beloved family pets as teenager (See painting of Toby). During 2020 I rekindled this love and did several commissioned watercolour sketches of people’s pets. When a client approached me earlier this year to do a portrait as a gift I enthusiastically accepted – on the scheduled day I started to dig out the watercolour paints and then on the spur of the moment decided to see how the painting world turn out in oils, as my easel and paints were set up anyway. I was blown away by how quickly this fun quirky little Jack Russell came to life before my eyes. Since then, I have so enjoyed connecting with and trying to express the spirit of several beloved animals – some still living and others sadly passed on.
